Congratulations to the 7th and 8th grade Band Students that traveled to Gadsden Alabama for Music Performance Assessment recently. After many weeks of hard work these students performed a concert of three musical pieces for three qualifed judges. After the stage performance the group was escorted to a room where they read and performed a piece of music they had not previously seen. This group of talented students received the highest markes possible, " Superior Ratings". This is the first time that the ZEJH band has made Superior Ratings at State Contest and we are very proud of them.

Ms. Todd would like to thank the students for their HARD work, the parents for their unyeilding assistance, the THS band and Mr. McDaniel for their continued support and Mr. Bailey and Mrs. Thomas for the opportunity to have a great band program at Zora Ellis.

Many of our students will be traveling to Gadsden on Wednesday, February 23rd to particpate in Alabama State Music Performance Assesment. The Students have been working hard and we look forward to a great performance.

Permission forms are due by Monday, February 21st. Please get those in ASAP.

If you would like to attend the performance, it will be held at Gadsden High School in Gadsden, AL.
We perform at 9:00 am. They will be performing: Manhatten Beach by Micheal Story, To a Skylark by Kevin Mixon and Ceremonium by R. W. Smith.

You may meet us there or come to ZEJH and leave when we do. We also invite you to eat lunch with us at the Gadsden Mall.

I am excited about this performance and the day with the students, as I hope they are too. They have really put in some great work!

MPA Preview Concert

Students should have taken home a handout for the trip to BB comer on Tuesday, February 8, 2011.

We will leave ZEJH at 3:30pm, we will take a school bus. Students will eat at the school prior to leaving. There will be snacks and drinks available for purchase at the event. (more details to come about food and prices)

ZEJH performs at 5:00 p.m. at BB Comer High School in Sylacauga.

(all bands in our county will perform; we are first, but will stay and watch every band)

Expected arrival time back at ZEJH is 8:30pm. (this time is an estimate and may change.)

Dress for the event is.... black dress pants, black vests, white band shirt, black bow tie, black band shoes and black socks. (Students should bring this attire to school on a hanger and hang it on the uniform rack in the bandroom.)

We will need chaperons for this trip. Please let Ms. Todd know ASAP if you are willing to chaperone.

General Admission for spectators is $3.00.

the BBOT will host a Silent Auction; Doors will open at

Halloween Concert

Solo and Ensemble

Today, 44 excited 7th and 8th grade band students boarded the bus and traveled to Solo and Ensemble Competition held in Lincoln, AL. Nervousness, anticipation, excitement and pride could all be felt from the students as they awaited their time to perform. Encouraging words from a friend, a listening ear and reassurance were offered from many students both before and after performances. The task at hand can be one that is difficult at an age when students have so many reservations. However, the many hours of preparation that each student put into their solos, duets and trio performances did not go unnoticed by the judges. The students received a total of 46 superior ratings, something to be very proud of.

Not only did the students have success musically, but each parent should be gleaming with pride from the representation that your student had today of their school, their band, themselves and you. Discipline was not an issue. EVERY student was well behaved and respectful the entire day to everyone they encountered, including the stop for lunch and the actual event.

I am so proud of each student for the hard work portrayed, the desire to be good and the outstanding behavior. Accomplishments such as these only continue to increase the quality of each student and our band program, not to mention the effect that it will have for future experiences at ZEJH and as the students continue on to Talladega High School as members of the band. I hope that everyone involved feels that they gained something from the experience and that those students that did not have the opportunity to participate this time will join in the fun next time. What a good day for the students of the Zora Ellis Band. Keep up the good work and continue to grow both musically and as an individual. :)

After many weeks of hard work, practice, preparation and perseverance the time had finally come for the 42 7th and 8th graders from Zora Ellis to sit on stage and present to the listeners their best musical efforts. Butterflies were amidst as the young musicians entered the warm-up room, many of them for the very first time. However, focus, preparation and good listening skills aided them in getting off to a great start. The travel from room to stage was very brief, yet the anticipation of what was about to come was almost overwhelming. Fear, anticipation, nervousness, excitement and pride could be seen among the bright faces of the 47 musicians as they took the stage at Gadsden High School to present their musical selections: Mt. Vernon March by Tom Molter, Dancing the Skies by Kevin Mixon and Furioso by R.W. Smith.

The moment they had been waiting for was more than some expected. As the students looked across the audience and saw the groups of other musicians and parents that had come to see them, including the Talladega High School Band, you could see a sense of wonder in their eyes. Wonder if what they very about to do would be good enough, wonder if a much rehearsed passage would be correct, wonder if the judges would like what they hear and the reoccurring question "what if I mess up?".

It was quite a large gathering for 8:30 a.m as the group presented with pride the final product of their many weeks of hard work, receiving ratings of "Excellent" from all three judges. As each piece ended and the next began you could see the wondering looks and fear turn into accomplishment and pride, as they successfully accomplished the task at hand.

But it's not over yet. We very quickly were escorted from stage to the sight-reading room so that we could give our best efforts to present a never seen before piece to the overseeing judge. The 18 7th graders and 24 8th graders eagerly waited as they listened to the judge explain the rules and distributed the folders. Opening the folders with wide eyes the students began to listen and prepare as we began going through the NEW piece. The process was the same as we practiced; yet time seemed to fly. It was very quick that we were given the signal to go ahead and present the piece to the best of our ability. The students did so with great effort, receiving a rating of "Excellent" from the sight-reading judge as well.

I am very proud of our students and the and the musical accomplishments that they made not only on Wednesday at MPA or during the weeks leading up to MPA, but for the entire time that they have been in band, whether it is the two years the 8th graders have spent or the almost one for the 7th grade beginners. The cooperation, behavior and efforts of these young student's should be commended. What great young people with great futures ahead of them. Congratulations Band!! Keep up the good work.

Hoover Winter Odyssey

The Ellis Emeralds, Dega Darlins and Dega Addition will be competing at Hoover High School in the Hoover Winter Odyssey winter guard competition on Saturday, February 27, 2010. This is the closest competition to Talladega. We invite everyone to come see the guards in action. The competition starts at 12 noon with percussion groups. Our groups perform at the following times.

Dega Darlins: 8:05pm

Awards are at 9:45pm

These students spent time learning scales and practicing sight-reading skills in order to audition. Wow! What a whirlwind of a week you have had. It has been great watching you learn and grow this week, as well as except challenge after challenge with a smile on your face and with a great attitude. :) I am so proud of your first performance and you should be too. Congratulations on 1st place. You had a great score for your first time out. I am also VERY excited about the way you conducted yourselves at the competition. If I did not know I would not have guessed that it was your first performance. I look forward to Hoover on February 27th. Lots of work to do by then, but with your work ethic we will get it done. And, what a great fan base we had with us. It is so wonderful to have OUR parents yelling in the stands!

We will Have practice on Monday at ZEJH from 3:00-5:00. We will listen to judges tapes and watch the video, as well as begin to clean and fix some things. See you then!

Congratulations to 8th grade band percussionist Jordan H.

He auditioned for All-state band against several other students from our district and came in 4th, winning a spot in the District II 2010 Honor Band. We are very proud of Jordan and his efforts and are excited about him representing Zora Ellis and the Talladega City School System at Honor Band.

He spent a lot of his time learning scales on Mallet instruments, rudiments on the snare drum and tympani tuning as well as preparing musical excerpts on all of them. He then did sight-reading as well. A challenge for sure, but nothing that hard work can't handle. Good job Jordan!

Talladega County Honor Band

Anyone who would like to try-out for Talladega County Honor Band should sign up with Ms. Todd immediately. We have had several sign up already, but I hope for a few more. I know we have more great musicians that are capable to do so.

Auditioning is the only way to get better. Even if you do not make it this year, you will learn the process and know what to do in the future. Don't let fear be the reason you miss out on fun with great musicians.

Cost of the honor band is $7.00 to audition. Auditions are on Tuesday, January 26th at Talladega High School beginning at 4:00 p.m. until we finish. Be sure to sign up with Ms. Todd on Monday! You may leave after you audition. You will find out the results on Wednesday morning. Each student who makes the honorband receives a medal to wear at concerts. T-shirts will be for sale for $10-$12.

Those making honor band will attend on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 29th and 30th, at Childersburg High School. A bus will take you to and from on Friday. On Saturday a bus will take you and then leave. Parents will need to make plans to pick students up at 11:30 to get dressed and eat lunch. The concert will begin at 2:00pm at Childersburg High School. (You will need food money for Friday; we will eat fast food for lunch.)

Mr. McDaniel will be in charge of this trip. Ms. Todd will be there on Friday morning, however, will have to leave in the afternoon for duties with the winter guards. Saturday Mr. McDaniel will take honor band students to Childersburg, Ms. Todd will go to Oak Grove with the Winter Guards.

I was watching TV the other night and this segment just randomly came on. Well, I don't guess it was random I am sure it was scheduled, however, I had no clue. So as I watched it I realized what a great video it would be to post on the blog and discuss with the students. With the million tasks that we all have scheduled and the time that it takes, often times we think that practicing is something that can wait or we can pass on for the day. However, no matter the task practice is ALWAYS important. I hope you enjoyed the video.

I must say what a great job the 8th grade band did today at the pep-rally and game. I am so proud of you guys. Not only was the playing very good, but the overall behavior of the group was simply outstanding. As a group you very easily and willingly made this a GREAT day and wonderful memory for you. I am excited to see what the rest of the year brings!

I have not mentioned the great job that you also did this past Friday night at the Pell City game. It too was a great accomplishment for you guys. A night that went very smooth.

Due to circumstances beyond our control, the ZEJH 8th grade trip with the high school band has been canceled. However the Friday night football game/tailgate party will be an event that we will participate in. We will meet at the ZEJH bandroom on Friday night at 6:00 pm. Typical games end around 10pm. Hi everyone!

I would like to start by saying that I am very proud of the turn out that we had for the instrument show on Tuesday, August 4, 2009. Many parents and students were present for answers to concerns and questions that they have had. I hope that everything was much more clear after you left the meeting.

If you missed the meeting and need to purchase an instrument please contact Gadsden Music at 1-800-264-7228 or call Ms. Todd in the bandroom at Zora Ellis for additional information.

There have been a few questions that keep resurfacing. I will answer these below .... hope this helps.

1.Can I buy an instrument online? You are more than welcome to explore options for instrument purchase. Keep in mind three things as you do this.

You get what you pay for?
If you don't recognize the brand there is probably a reason. (If you have questions about brands of instruments please contact Ms. Todd.)
Check out repair options. (Students will at some point have a repair issue. Local dealers will not work on some instruments. If you have to send an instrument in to an online company and have it repaired it could take a long time to get it fixed; instruction time that your child misses.)

2. How much is a band book? Books can be purchased the first week of school during classtime. Books are $11 for all instruments except percussion which is $16. We use Standard of Excellence (enhanced edition) *checks should be made out to ZEJH

3. When can I pay band fees and how much are they? Band fees are $30.00 and the uniform fee is $60.00. You may pay this at the beginning of school or when the due date approaches. Students will receive an additional handout with this information on the first day of school?

4. Where do I put my instrument on the first day of school? Each band student may put his or her instrument in the bandroom daily upon arriving to school. On the first day however students will report to the lunchroom or Auditorium for a brief assembly. Students should report directly to their area and bring instruments to the bandroom afterwards. More information will be given on the first day of class.

5. What if band is not on my schedule? If band should be on your schedule and is not. Please call the front office at ZEJH and let them know ASAP. If on the first day your schedule is still not correct please let Ms. Todd and your homeroom teacher know. We will take care of this as quickly as possible.

6. When are Ellis Emerald try-outs? Young ladies that are in the band will receive information the first week of school regarding clinic and try-outs, which will be held in August. *in order to audition and join the Ellis Emeralds students must be in the band. For more information regarding this group please visit their blog (click here)

7. Where and how do I purchase reeds? We do not sale individual reeds. Students must purchase an entire box. The cost of Clarinet reeds is $25.00 for a box and Saxophone is $30.00. In the beginning students will go through reeds rather quickly, but as they find out what to do and how to care for them they will last long. Students should have four reeds in their case at all times. I recommend keeping the remainder of the box at home.

Graduation Performance

Talladega High School 2009 Graduation Ceremonies

Attention All 8th Grade Band Students!

Graduation: Thursday, May 28, 2009

Location: Mary Dumas Stadium (In the event of rain, the ceremony will be moved to Harwell Auditorium; the band will not play. Only the original six tickets given by seniors will be recognized if the ceremonies are in Harwell. All additional audience members will be accommodated in the ZEJH lunchroom via live feed.)

Time: 7:00 pm (be in your seat in the ZEJH bandroom at 6:00pm)

Admission: Free (any parent attending must have a ticket. Tickets may be picked up from the Central office on Tuesday, May 26 or Wednesday, May 27, 2009; Tickets are free, however, you must have one in order to enter the ceremonies. Be sure to have proper identification when picking up ticket.)

Dress: Black pants, Black socks, Black Shoes and white shirt. (white shirt does not have to be your band shirt. Any appropriate DRESS shirt will be fine.)

We will be playing the Star Spangled Banner, Alma Mater and Pomp and Circumstance.

Instrument Placement

All 6th grade students at EACH elementary school will receive the opportunity to try all of the instruments in an effort to help them make a decision about 7th grade band. We are very excited about this opportunity and hope that the 6th grade students are as well. We began yesterday at Graham with a great group of 6th graders and will continue today. So far this has proven to be a wonderful experience for all involved. We will make our rounds to each elementary school by the first of next week.

If you student is absent on your instrument day and would like to schedule a time to come by the bandroom please feel free to call me at 315-5706. We want every student to have this great priveledge.

Thanks to Mr. Bailey for allowing me the time to visit each elementary school and provide this service in an effort to make our band program stronger!

For each 7th grader this was the last concert for you as a beginner. Next year will be packed full of fun and excitement. There will be football games, the homecoming pep-rally, concerts, competitions, etc. I am looking forward to it, I hope you are too. I antcipate an OUTSTANDING YEAR!

8th graders.... we wish you well as you move on to great and better things. You have so much to give to everything that you do. You are about to move on to a different phase of life that has a lot of to offer. I am so exicted for you as you embark on this new adventure. I am also very proud of you. You have made your mark on the band program at ZEJH and for that you should hold your head high. You have made accomplishments and gained recognition that will be there long after you have moved on. I am sure you will do the same things but in a bigger and better way as you move on to Talladega High School. See you at Band Camp!

On April 23, 2009, the Talladega High School Jazz Band was invited to perform for the International Motorsports Hall of Fame ceremonies. With great preparation, lots of anticipation and much excitement the group of young musicians took on this adventure with great enthusiasm. Much is to be said about the musical presentation and outstanding representation of the Talladega City Schools from this group of young people; it was truly outstanding.

A special thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Smith for their help providing dinner for the group, as well as Mrs. Rasco. Also to Dr. Frank Buck for his attendance and support at this event. It is wonderful to have such great support from parents and administrators in the Talladega City School System.

Tuesday, April 7, 2009, during 5th period at Zora Ellis the sounds of drums filled the air. The Talladega High School Percussion section assisted as the The Talladega City School Education Foundation delivered grants to recepients. Entering through our door with a large check were Dr. Horton, Mr. Campbell, Dr. Buck, Mr. Bailey, Mrs. and Mrs. Rasco, the THS drumline and Mr. McDaniel.

Each year the TCS foundation takes applications for Grants and they do their best to fill the needs of as many people as possible. We are very happy to be one of those wishes granted. Our grant was titled, A good foundation, where we asked for money to buy a much needed tuba.

Several other teachers in the system were awarded grants as well. At our school, Mrs. Armstrong, gifted teacher, was also awarded the grant for which she applied.

We have been very fortunate this year securing funds for several needed percussion instruments earlier in the year from a grant with Jim Pruitt and are very thankful to the foundation for granting us the opportunity to add another needed instrument to our inventory. As more opportunities arise we hope to acquire even more needed instruments for our program, better meeting the needs of our students, our school and our community.

The Challenge...

Part of the challenge was making it this far and you did. Part of the challenge was only five days of rehearsals to fix things and you did. Part of the challenge was staying focused despite the late school start and you did. Part of the battle was giving it your best and you did.

I am so proud of the efforts that you put forth throughout this entire process. To receive ratings of 'superior' at district and then take on the challenge of state contest was a great accomplishment within itself. You are to be commended for you scores of "Good" at state contest.... because it was STATE contest. I am especially proud of the rating of "Excellent" that we received in sightreading; a challenge that we all took on together. To take on a challenge with such enthusiasm and determination says a lot about you both as a group and as an individual. I am certain that every single person involved learned something from the process and that is what it is really all about. I know I learned several things and had an experience with a great group of young people that I will never forget. The desire to do better and the slight disappointment of not doing as well as you hoped, means that there are great things ahead of you and you are headed in the right direction. Good things are happening and you are a major part of it. I was very proud to stand on stage with you on Monday!

I know that this adventure will help our program at Zora Ellis to grow and be something that you are proud of. I also know that as you leave Zora Ellis and go to THS that this will help you and the band that you will be a part of there. Congratulation's on such a GREAT achievement! I am VERY proud of YOU!

STATE CONTEST update 3/1/09

I know that most of you are aware that school will be delayed tomorrow. Dr. Horton has said for us to go ahead with State Contest plans as normal. We will delay 30 minutes.

Please meet in the Zora Ellis Bandroom at 9:00 for warm-up. We will depart at 10:00 a.m. (Please be in your seat at 9:00, not walking through the door.)

You should arrive dressed in BAND uniform (black vest, black band shoes, black socks, white shirt, don't forget your bowtie.)

Also, if you have not turned in your permission form be sure to have it with you on Monday!

The amount of pride that I had on Friday as we performed on Stage at Gadsden High School and as I read the scores to our students afterwards is beyond description. A HUGE Congratulations is in order for the members of the ZEJH band that participated in District Assessment and received Superior ratings, which qualified them to move on to State! This is truly a great accomplishment, even more than you realize! Dr. Buck, also a former junior high band director stated, "I have state contest programs from every year dating back to 1956. I can find no record of a junior high band from this entire county performing at state contest other than performances by Talladega Jr. High in 1964 and 1965."

After working out a few kinks we have a spot and will travel to Briarwood Church in Birmingham, AL on Monday, March 2nd to perform at 1:00 p.m, yes, that is a week from tomorrow. All information will go out in class tomorrow! Due to honor band and other conflicts we have limited rehearsal time before the 2nd. Please use your time wisely and practice at home.

I am so proud of the accomplishments of our students and look forward to what they have to offer not only at Zora Ellis, but as they move on to the high school band next year. The Talladega High School Band also received superior ratings and will travel back to Gadsden on March 4th for State.

This will also be my first trip to state contest, as a director. I am so proud to be able to share this experience with such a great group of students. It is something I will treasure forever!

After two long weeks of hard work and the addition of new material, the Ellis Emeralds, Dega Darlins Addition and Dega Darlins traveled to Oak Grove, Alabama, on Saturday, February 7, 2009, for their second winter guard compeition of the season. The excitement of each group being promoted to the next classification and the anticipation to see where they would stack up against the competition proved to be a very rewarding wait. Each group had an outstanding performance.

The Ellis Emeralds came in a close 3rd, proving that no challenge was too much. The challenge of competing with several high school groups was something they were willing to take on full force and do with success.

The Dega Darlins Addition (a group of all 9th graders) competed in the Scholastic B classification where they were awarded 2nd place for their efforts.

The Dega Darlins astounded the competition and very proudly took 1st place under their new classification, Scholastic AAA.

A long trip, 12 major scales, 3 prepared pieces, sight-reading and a nervous wait led to great news for our very own Cate Joseph. We are very proud of her for trying out for the Alabama All-State band, especially since she is a beginning oboe player. What a great goal so early in a musician's life. I am so proud of the hard work that she put forth and the accomplishments that she has made so far. As a result of trying out for All-State, Cate Joseph was selected to participate in the District Honor Band that will be held in Gadsden, Alabama this weekend.

This a great opportunity for our students to grow musically, meet other musicians from local schools and at the same time to make friendships that will last a lifetime. I encourage everyone to audition. Especially since the auditions will be held at Talladega High School. If you never try out you will never gain the experience to be successful at auditioning. It is just like anything else, it takes practice and preparation.

Upon making honor band the Clinic will be on Friday, February 28th and Saturday, February 29th at Zora Ellis Jr. High. The concert will be held on Saturday at Harwell auditorium. This is a great time to audition since it is right here in Talladega. Start working now.

The Ellis Emeralds traveled to Pell City this past Saturday to compete in the first Winter Guard competition of the season, Field Day. They had a great day and in the end won 1st place in the cadet class. As proud as we are of them for the 1st place finish, we went on to discover that they did such a great job that the SCGC promoted them from the Cadet classification, that is made up of jr. high guards, to the Novice classification where they will compete against high school guards.

What a great Accomplishment. Congratulations ladies!

All-State Tryouts

Students auditioning for all-state,

With the break coming to an end, I hope that you have been practicing. The break flew by and all-state try-outs are quickly upon us. Auditions will be held at Jacksonville High School on Saturday, January 10, 2008. Yes, that is the Saturday after we return from the holidays. With the number of students we have signed up it will be the responsibility of the student/parents to get to the audition. I suggest that a few of you get together and carpool. Last year several students did this and ended up having a great experience.

Registration is at 8am. Students will sign up for a number, audition and after each student auditions the results for that section will be posted. Typically students audition and then go eat lunch, then come back to see if results are posted. Remember that if you do not make all-state you may make the District Honor band. They use the same audition for both.

You will receive more information about registration on the Tuesday we return to school.

I hope that each of you have had great progress practicing over the break.

(Before you go to the audition, each student participating must pass off their scales. The best time to do this is in the mornings. See Ms. Todd to set up a time.)

With a great audience of friends and family, sounds of the holiday season filled the air as the ZEJH bands and the Talladega High School band performed their 2008 Annual Christmas concert in Harwell Auditorium on Tuesday Night.

The 7th grade band took another step up the musical ladder as they performed their second concert of the year with success. Anticipation and pride was exhibited greatly by those involved. Great Job guys!The 8th grade followed with a very exciting performance and left nothing to be questioned about the dedication and pride that they have been putting forth daily. We are excited as we move forward and begin to prepare for district competition. Keep up the good work!

With expertise and great musical feeling the Talladega High School band wrapped up the night with an outstanding performance of thier musical selections. A great representation of the Talladega City School system. We are proud of you guys and the milestones that you have reached.

Each girl did a great job decorating the float and representing Zora Ellis and the Band. I am very proud of you and happy that we have such an outstanding group of Ellis Emeralds.

Giving Back....

It is great to have students in the classroom learning daily. It is also a wonderful happening when those students move on from jr. high and high school and continue thier endeavors at the college level. However, better than both of those is when that same student returns and gives back to his alma mater by offering his talents to those younger.

Zack is a great example of just that. He travels to Talladega each Friday from Jacksonville State University, where he is a music major, to give lessons to French Horn students at both Talladega High School and Zora Ellis Jr. High. We are very happy to have him and just as happy to have students open and willing to 'pick his brain' for any tips or knowledge that he may have. What better way to learn than from someone who has been exactly where you are sitting.

Double Reeds!

What is a double Reed instrument? A double reed instrument refers to an instrument that has two reeds made of cane that produce a sound by vibrating. Double reed instruments do not have a typical mouthpiece with which we are familiar.

Examples of these are the oboe and the Bassoon.

Most of the reed instruments that we are familiar with are single reed instruments such as the clarinet and saxophone. Single reed instruments are those that have a reed made of cane attached to a mouthpiece.

We are very excited about our recent interest in double reed instruments at Zora Ellis and THS. We have several students that have chosen to begin oboe and bassoon this year. They are dedicated and off to a very good start. Each friday Eric, an oboe student from Jacksonville State University, travels to Talladega to give lessons to these very enthusiastic students. We are very thankful for the hard work of the students and the connection of such an outstanding institution such as that of Jacksonville State University.

ATTENTION ALL TUBA AND EUPHONIUM PLAYERS

The tubas and Euphoniums from Talladega High and Zora Ellis will be attending Tuba Christmas in Atlanta this year. Below is a little information and a video clip of previous events.

TUBACHRISTMAS was conceived in 1974 as a tribute to the late artist/teacher William J. Bell, born on Christmas Day, 1902. Through the legendary William J. Bell we reflect on our heritage and honor all great artists/teachers whose legacy has given us high performance standards, well structured pedagogy, professional integrity, personal values and a camaraderie envied by all other instrumentalists. The first TUBACHRISTMAS was conducted by the late Paul Lavalle in New York City's Rockefeller Plaza Ice Rink on Sunday, December 22, 1974. Traditional Christmas music performed at the first TUBACHRISTMAS was arranged by American composer Alec Wilder who ironically died on Christmas Eve, 1980. Wilder composed many solo and ensemble compositions for tuba and euphonium. He was a loyal supporter of every effort to improve the literature and public image of our chosen instruments. Through Alec Wilder we express our respect and gratitude to all composers who continue to embrace our instruments with their compositions and contribute to the ever growing solo and ensemble repertoire for tuba and euphonium.

What a great job you did last night at the Halloween Concert!!! I am very proud of each and every 7th grade and 8th grade band member. The beginning band pulled off their portion of the concert, completing the most feared task of any beginner, the first concert. The 8th grade presented themselves well, performing to an already established expectation. The 8th grade beginners also contributed well to the 8th grade portion of the concert, laying to rest several of their concerns.

The mixture of outstanding and well thought out costumes, candy, a good performance, supporting parents and administration, as well as wonderful students, all added up to be a GREAT success. Congratulations to Jordan, Alexis, Carter and Ketera for winning the costume portions of the concert.

I look forward to the next concert, which will be the Christmas Concert. It's not far away; mark your calendars for Tuesday, December 9, 2008.

Also, if anyone has pictures or a video of the performance please send them to me via email or to the school. Due to apparent technical difficulties I do not have video or pictures. I really would love to have both! Thanks.

Keith Taylor, sports producer at ABC 33/40 sent an email stating, "I'm currently putting together tomorrow night's Friday Night Blitz show, and would love to make your band our "Blitz Band of the Week." "

How GREAT you guys! Hard work does pay off. So set your VCR's or TiVo or whatever for ABC 33/40 at 10:30, so that you can see the show. They are using clips from the Pell City vs Dega game.

We are proud of the Talladega High School band and for the great following they are creating by people and the media. Tune in to watch the show and support your band. I can't wait until you guys are in the High School band and getting the same experiences.

A four day weekend, A TUESDAY free dress day, a confusing schedule, your only jr. high pep-rally..... along with the fact that we were there WAY early..... all added together to be a great day. Who knew?

I got back in my office tonight to realize that you guys not only did a great job at the pep-rally, but willingly and sucessfully performed at the game as well. Did you realize we were out there for FOUR hours. Yep, so no wonder you were tired....right? But what a good job you did.

I have to commend you on the work you put in leading up to the performance. Great strides... no doubt. I am very proud of you... and I hope you are too. I also, just have to mention the great fun and excited attitudes that came from the group tonight.... I must say... you made it a very fun and enjoyable event!

It was nice to have the Dega Darlins come perform and the members of the THS band to stop by to play and hangout. WE appreciate the support that we get from the high school band members and I sincerely hope that one day that will be one of you coming back to visit your jr. high band from the high school.

Also, Great job by the Ellis Emeralds.... Congratulations... that was the first performance of the year for you guys... and a great one it was.

I hope you all enjoyed yourselves.

Halloween Concert!

The feeling of fall is in the air and with the month of October there is a buzz about the end event, Halloween.

The ZEJH Bands will present a Halloween Concert this year on Thursday October 30, 2008, at 6:30 p.m. The location? Non other than our very own spooky venue itself, Harwell Auditorium.

You will hear the ghosts and goblins of Halloween as both the 7th grade and 8th grade band present songs that they have diligently been preparing.

Students, as well as audience members are encouraged to dress up in costume.
We hope that this proves to be a very exciting event. This is the debut performance for the 2008-09 beginning band.

Admission for this concert is free. Donations are accepted and appreciated.

*All 7th and 8th grade band students are encouraged to bring decorations and one bag of candy per student. All decorations will be returned after the concert. Candy and decorations may be brought to the Bandroom anytime between now and Oct. 27th.

ZEJH Homecoming

The Zora Ellis 8th grade band will be playing at the ZEJH Homecoming Festivities.

The Pep-rally will be during school on Tuesday, October 7, 2008. It will be held during 6th period. Students will be called to the bandroom at the appropriate time.

The game will be at 5:00 p.m. We will play in the stands, both stand tunes and for the homecoming court. We will meet in the bandroom at 4pm for the game. Student's are to wear black pants, socks, band shoes and a red shirt. You may wear you band shirt from last year since we do not have this year's band shirt yet. If you do not have last years shirt, any red shirt will be fine.

Please remember all of you music and anything else that you might need for the game.

We will play for both the 7th grade game and the 8th grade game. Students will be dismissed at 7:30 so they may prepare for the homecoming dance that begins at 8pm in the gym. If you need to leave anything in the bandroom for the dance, that is acceptable.

I look forward to a great pep-rally and game, GO TIGERS!

Thank you 8th grade band members that attended the Gadsden Marching Band Contest. I hope this gave you a glimpse of what the other side of the band world has to offer. It is not just about Friday night football and concerts, there is a lot more to band life than that.

I want to commend you on your great behavior. It was nice to have such a great group in addition to the high school band. Several of them told me to let you know that they enjoyed having you present and was glad that we attended. They look forward to having you join them next year when you get the high school.

A special thank you to Mrs. George, Mr. McDougal and Mrs. Cochran for attending this event as our chaperones and doing such a fine job. We are always glad to have parents with us.

I am very excited for the 8th graders to be going to support the Talladega High School Marching Band at the Mid-south Band Competition in Gadsden on Saturday. I know that everyone will have a great time! This is going to be a great opportunity for the 8th grade members to see the competitive side of marching band, as well, as what other schools are doing.

Don't forget to bring your permission form to the Bandroom prior to the trip. Everyone must have turned one in to get on the bus.

ALL Chaperones are welcome to attend. The more the better! Let me know if you are going to chaperon by indicating so on your child's permission form.

Students will need money for food and any souvenirs that they may wish to purchase.

The tailgate party was a hit on Friday night. It was great having the 8th grade play in the stands with the THS band and proved to be a very rewarding experience. In general, I would like to commend everyone for their good behavior, positive attitudes and participation. You guys looked and acted as professionals, which I appreciate. Thank you to the parents that chaperoned this event; We could not do it without you!

Thank you to Mrs. Rasco for heading up the tailgate party and doing such a fine job. It was nice to get to see not only our very own THS band perform at this event, but the Sylacauga Band as well.

High School Football Game!!

The 8th grade band will be attending the Sylacauga Vs. Talladega High School Football game tomorrow night as guest of the Talladega High School Band. We will march in with the band, sit with them in the stands, play some stand tunes, and have some fun.

A few reminders for tomorrow!

Be sure that you have turned in your permission form.
Dress: You may wear the game day shirt if you bought one, if not wear a white collared shirt. You will also need to wear black dress pants, BLACK socks and black band shoes. (If you do not have your shoes yet, wear solid black shoes.)
Students may arrive at the bandroom between 5 and 5:30. (NO later than 5:30)
Be sure to eat before you come. Students will not eat or walk around the game. They will be with the band the entire time. Students will receive drinks at 3rd quarter break, but must stay in the designated area.
Please remember this is a school related event and all rules apply.
Last, but certainly not least... Don't forget your instrument and flip folder.
If you need to call someone at the conclusion of the game, you may keep a cell phone in your instrument case or your pocket, but you are NOT to have it out at any time during the game or the break. The bandroom phone will also be available for those that need it.

Exciting News!

Great News To Share! There are no doubt many needs in the public school systems today. Among those many needs are some that hit very close to home for our band. We are very fortunate to have been informed recently that Senator Jim Pruitt is going to be able to help us meet some of those many needs. The Zora Ellis Band received a donation of $5000 dollars to use where needed in our band program. With so many things to buy and the desire to get the most for our money, we have made the decision to buy some VERY much needed percussion equipment. This is equipment that is not in need of repair or renewal, it is equipment that we simply do not have available to our excited and motivated students. Not only will this purchase enhance the percussion classes at Zora Ellis, but the addition of these instruments will aid the entire band program in its musical endeavors. I am so excited at the opportunity to add to what the band program at Zora Ellis has to offer. No doubt a Thank You to Senator Pruitt for his generous and supportive efforts.

The days of sitting in the air conditioning playing guitar hero and spending time on the computer browsing through myspace have come to an end..... school is back in session!

The usual adjustments to the schedule associated with the first day back to school, coupled with a threat of severe weather that sent us home earlier than normal, made for a very interesting day. However, what a day it was!

I am so encouraged by the number of enthusiastic students that walked through the bandroom door today. The anticipation of putting together and playing an instrument was somewhat put to rest today when the 7th grade beginners attempted to produce their first sounds. The realization that the 8th grade band seemed to have as they discussed the many events of the year and the exact moment when they realized that they ARE now the older band students at Zora Ellis was humorous. Also, the fact that the beginning percussion class was upset when the weather issue occurred before the anticipated moment of playing the drum just tells me that our band is full of students that care, want to learn and are excited about the possibilities. That is what any band program needs. How fortunate for us to have that in Talladega, Alabama.

I look forward to tomorrow and actually getting to play in 4th period, as well as the opportunity to meet the new addition of 8th graders that joined the ZEJH band program by participating in the 8th grade beginning band.

Welcome officially 7th grade band members. It was great tonight to see so many excited and energetic young people, as well as parents, at the instrument show. I am VERY excited about this year and where we will go musically together. My only regret is that for some reason I did not take pictures. I would love to have had them to post here. Mr. and Mrs. Ferguson raved about the crowd and patience of everyone there. Thank you for helping things run very smooth and quick.

I am looking forward to working with each student and parent to make the Zora Ellis band program the best that it can be.

If any 7th or 8th grade beginning band student did not attend the instrument show and purchase an instrument, or if you have not obtained an instrument by some other means, please contact me as soon as possible. There are still options available.

Santa Clara Van Guard arrived on campus early this morning. They are scheduled to rehearse today from 1:00 p.m - 5:00 p.m. before going to Jacksonville State University for the show scheduled for tonight. The best time to see them is around 3:00 for their run through of the show. After the run through they will begin to pack up for the show.

Feel free to come by and observe an award winning group in action. Stay for 10 minutes or for the entire 4 hours, its up to you!

Just a reminder that Instrument purchase day is set for Tuesday, August 5, 2008 in the ZEJH Lunchroom at 6:00. Gadsden Music Company will be present with several options available for purchase of both new and used instruments. They also provide us with weekly service by coming to the ZEJH bandroom and performing needed repairs.

Bring your check book...they offer a rent-to-own payment plan that starts by paying the first months payment that night. There are also discounts available for those that would like to pay the full amount for their instrument on this night.

Supplies will also be available such as; reeds, oils, cleaning kits, folding stands, etc. Each Saxophone and clarinet player will be required to keep a box of reeds in his or her case. The brand of reeds you should purchase are Vandoren, strength 3.

The following are additional items that students will need to purchase:

The book that we will use this year is Standard of Excellence (enhanced), book 1. If you have already purchased Essential Elements 2000 keep it and bring it to the first day of class to exchange it for the book we will be using.
Clarinet and Saxophone players will need to purchase a Rovner Ligature. This would be a good night to do so, as well as a box of Vandoren Reeds.
Brass players that did not purchase an instrument from Gadsden Music, should make sure that they have the correct mouthpiece. Instruments from Gadsden Music come equipped with the correct mouthpiece. (see Ms. Todd for assistance.)

As far as the band fee and uniform fee is concerned, this may be payed on this night or when school starts.

We have been very fortunate this year to have two great opportunities very close and convenient for everyone. In June we were honored to host Spirit Drum and Bugle Corp on our campus for an entire week and on Sunday, July 28, 2008, the 6 time national champions, Santa Clara Vanguard will be on our campus for the day. Santa Clara Vanguard will travel from a performance in Atalanta, GA on July 26, 2008, and will rehearse on our campus in preparation for the Drum Corp show scheduled at Jacksonville State University on Sunday, July 27, 2008, at 6:30 p.m. For more information about Drum Corp or for any scheduling and ticket information click here.

BBQ, Fireworks and Music all come to mind with the upcoming holiday of July 4th. Several events to commemorate this event take place each year. One that I would like to recommend is the 4th of July concert presented by the Boston Pops and Keith Lockhart. This is an outstanding presentation that attracts millions. Below is a news announcement advertising the event.

Rascal Flatts will expand their sound when they join conductor Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra on the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular, a TV special airing July 4 on CBS. Rascal Flatts will perform several of their hits with the orchestra during the live telecast from the Charles River Esplanade in Boston. The special will be hosted by Craig Ferguson, the Scottish-born late night talk show host who became a U.S. citizen earlier this year. ... In related news, Jerry Lee Lewis, Huey Lewis & the News and American Idol winner Taylor Hicks are among those performing on the PBS special, A Capitol Fourth. Actor Jimmy Smits will host the program live from the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. The July 4 telecast will also feature Broadway star Brian Stokes Mitchell, classical vocalists Hayley Westenra and Harolyn Blackwell and the National Symphony Orchestra.

Formerly known as the 2007-2008 ZEJH 8th Grade Band, these young musicians recently finished their first week as the newest members of the 2008-2009 Talladega High School Band, by participating in Freshman Band Week. With enthusiasm, pride and a bit of nervousness these students forged ahead to the next goal at hand. We are very proud to say that they are stepping up to their next task with great accomplishments behind them and we wish them luck as they start a whole new musical experience with the THS Bands. We know you will do well and hope that you continue to do your best, as well as create memories that will last a lifetime.

Marching Band!

It's 90 degrees outside, everyone is staying inside at all costs, and what do bands do? Get out there and march and play so that they can present an entertaining show for each and every football game and practice until its perfect enough to take it to competition. Most of the time this entails standing in a position, responding to instructions as you move from position to position and somehow playing at the same time, then doing it over and over again until you have as perfect as possible.

Spirit Drum and Bugle Corp is as close as it will ever be, right here in Talladega, Alabama. Spirit will be at Talladega High School all week Sunday, June 1, 2008 - Saturday, June 7, 2008.

Anyone who would like to come by and watch rehearsal is welcome to come at any time. The schedule changes daily but is based off of the following.

Also, did you know each year there is a young composers project? We know that someone writes the music that we play, but has it ever occurred to you that it could be someone your very own age. A common question recently seems to be: Is it too late to join band?

The Answer is NO! ITS NOT too late.

As a matter of fact we would love to have you. Several 7th and 8th graders are still signing up daily. However, it is important that we meet with each student entering band and help them get set on an instrument, both for scheduling and purchasing purposes. The last group opportunity to do this is on Tuesday, June 17th, 2008. Students may schedule a 10 minute slot between the hours of 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Summer is a good time for students to encounter a different kind of music and right here in Talladega at that. Spirit Drum and Bugle Corp will be on the THS campus during the first week of June for a week of rehearsals. For those of you not familiar with Drum Corp visit http://www.dci.org/ for more information, including ticket information, and to view various groups. There are several shows this year that are close to Talladega and would be great to go to with a group of friends. They include; Spain Park, Atlanta, and Jacksonville.

Check back often for times and updates on the practice schedule of Spirit while they are here in Talladega. I will list good times to come by and watch them practice as soon as they are available. When summer comes it is easy to fall into the saying 'I will get around to it'. Summer is a great time for you to practice things that may give you extra problems throughout the school year. Summer is a great time to learn and memorize your scales. You can download a scale sheet from the blog if you have lost yours. Set a schedule.... a scale a week and when school starts you will be finishing up the 12 major scales..... avoid simply saying 'I will get around to it".

Do you like music? Do you wish you could do something fun and interesting with your friends? Field trips anyone? Membership in a group that will help you to excel both academically and socially?

It's that time of year! Ms. Todd and the ZEJH band are looking for new members. ANYONE that would like to join the ZEJH or THS bands are welcome to join and should contact Ms. Todd.

Getting started is easy! NO Experience is required! We teach you everything that you need to know. If you would like to sign up for band and have not contacted Ms.Todd, do so immediately. Each year we have an instrument try-out day, giving each student the opportunity to try each instrument. The date has been set: May 21, 2008 at the ZEJH bandroom from 1:00p.m.- 6:30p.m.

We would love for you to come by and try-out an instrument so that you can have the opportunity to join the ZEJH band. To set up a try-out time or to get needed answers to questions please contact Ms. Todd. (315-5706).

Graduation Performance

The 7th and 8th grade band members will perform with the THS band at Graduation on May 22, 2008. The band will meet at 6:00 p.m, graduation begins at 7:00 p.m. Dress for this event is black pants, shoes and socks, with a white shirt.

Rehearsal will be Thursday, May 15, 2008 at the THS Bandroom from 3:30 til 4:30.

Alabama Symphony Orchestra Field Trip - 7th Grade Band!

The 7th grade band traveled to the BJCC in Birmingham today to see professionals at work. The orchestra performed a variety of works featuring: Sleeping Beauty; Tchaikovsky, Pizzicato Polka; Stauss, Symphony #1 (movt. 2); Shostakovich, The Unanswered Question; Charles Ives, Scheherazade; Rimsky-Korsakov and Harry Potter; John Williams. While all of the music was not recognized by the students, the skill and dedication that went into the performance was for sure. Students observed skills and techniques that they are learning and attempting to apply daily in class. What a wonderful trip this was. Congratulations students on your excellent representation of your school, your band, your parents and yourself!
